Keep ’em Coming!
September 1, 2011Wow! Lots of great comments and ideas so far!
It appears to me that there seems to be some general consensus behind adding some sort of public art, landscaping, and trees to this space. I like those ideas a lot. I think each of those things would add much-needed visual appeal to the park.
I also like that some people have talked about closing that one block (between 8th and K) of West Virginia Avenue. I don’t know how the people whose homes front that one block would feel; that’s another topic and discussion. At the least though, I think that entire area could be signed better for safety.
A dog park near Florida Avenue is another great idea. I’d be happy to help out with any eventual community effort there. For now, I’d personally like to focus on the K Street Triangle park to avoid stretching myself too thin.
So keep the comments coming! I think it’s important that we have a meaningful discussion about the future of this space. Tell your friends and neighbors and encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions here. I’m hoping that we can develop a plan this fall and work to identify resources and paths forwards over the winter.
I hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend!

Hi there,
Adam Healy spread the word! Congrats on blog and efforts. Over on Wylie street we have an interest to get new fence for garden lot. May I talk to you for inspiration on how to make this happen?

Hi there. I live in the 800 block of K St. I like the idea of doing something with that space. One option would be to work with Casey Trees to come up with a space and location appropriate tree grove planting. I also like the idea where within the grove of trees, perhaps there could be a historical granite monument/statue commemorating some kind of historical element or person from the neighborhood.
What also caught my eye in these posts was the idea of closing down the short section of West VA ave between 8th and Florida. One related idea I’ve been gestating and that I’d be interested in talking with people about is the thought of trying to stop through traffic (only allowing local traffic) down that block AND K Street more broadly by also trying to eliminate the ability of people to take a left turn off Florida onto K street at 12th St.
The traffic comming down West Virginia to K St, as well as off Florida onto K St at 12th St is a real problem. Not only does it create a veritable highway of crazy Maryland commuters coming down K street that divides the neighborhood, it also causes tremendous public safety problems (speeders, stop sign and light runners, etc.), and the air quality deterioration from all the large trucks and commuters is horrible.
I’d really like to see this addressed. If others are interested in formulating a plan of action on that, please let me know.
Thanks for starting this blog.

Cody, excellent work on coordinating this effort. I would like to work with you to notify all residents in the neighborhood of your efforts. A postcard dropped in their mailbox would suffice, I’m sure. This will guarantee buy-in from all interested residents.
I would love to see one or a combination of the following:
– art piece paying tribute to history of neighborhood commissioned by local artist
– “green” initiative with hanging garden, solar-powered installment, and “wishing well” fountain
I agree with the issue of the traffic along K at the West Virginia triangle as well as the intersection at 12th. As we improve the park, let’s also take a look at how we can extend the considerable community support Cody has galvanized towards correcting these dangerous neighborhood traffic patterns.
sorry, that wasn’t an anonymous comment but i hit post before adding my email address…
